ntil the first half of the 20th century, the city of Turin constituted the most important and wealthiest market for Piedmont wines. For many centuries, wines of the caliber of Barolo, Barbaresco, Asti, Gattinara, Barbera and Dolcetto have engaged here in fierce competition. In this context, little room was left to the farmers who worked the land just outside the city, at the foot of the hills overlooking Turin.Luckily for them, in the past few decades, the consumers have started paying attention to anything that is "small" and "discreet." In this way, these farmers too have managed to find a market niche for their wines, selling them to those who can appreciate a good wine for its qualities and not for its name. Among the various types of Collina Torinese D.O.C. wines, special attention should be paid to the Malvasia, a sweet, aromatic red made with indigenous Malvasia di Schierano grapes, and to Pelaverga (or Cari), a light, medium-sweet red with a characteristic mulberry color made with Pelaverga grapes grown in a restricted area.
