Sciacca (DOC)

ciacca is a small harbor in the province of Agrigento, in Sicily. The ancient town itself is situated high on cliffs overlooking the harbor and the Mediterranean Sea. It has some beautiful examples of 18th-century architecture. Sciacca's economy is traditionally based on agricultural products such as cereals, citrus fruit, olive oil and wine.

The Sciacca D.O.C. appellation was established in 1998. It covers the entire territory of Sciacca and that of the neighboring town of Caltabellotta. Although not vast at all, this area enjoys a climate and soil that are highly favorable to growing vines of any kind and category. In fact, the otherwise strict D.O.C. regulations for this appellation allow the production of the usual white, red and rosé wines, as well as seven other varieties, some obtained from traditional local grapes like Inzolia, Grecanico and Nero d'Avola and others obtained from recently imported varieties.

The most interesting wine produced at Sciacca is Riserva Rayana. This wine is made in a restricted area of Sciacca using Catarratto Lucido and Inzolia grapes. It is a vigorous wine of great character with a deep gold color, an intense, persistent bouquet, and full taste. Riserva Rayana must be aged two years, at least one of which in barrels, before being bottled.
