he Monferrato is part of the vast system of hills that extends from the Po to the southern limits of Piedmontese territory. It includes the Langhe and the Asti district. The district is much more historical than geographical in nature. It is a region of castles and separate social and economic centers. The battle waged in the past to create a major state in the hills as well as the struggle for independence and liberty have without doubt emphasized the separateness of the character of the region in comparison with the rest of Piedmont. As in the past, the district is above all a region of noble vineyards and truffles, so that it is of interest not only from a cultural and historical but also and above all from a gastronomic standpoint. The Rubino di Cantavenna, with a highly limited production area, is one of the leading wines of the Monferrato. It was "designed" by Professor Giovanni Dalmasso, a researcher and enologist with an outstanding reputation, who identified the fundamental vinicultural technique to be applied in making the wine.
The cooperative winery of Cantavenna, which produces the wine, is a monument to the fallen of the last world war, having been constructed in 1949 in memory of local residents killed in the dark days of 1944.
The Rubino di Cantavenna is highly appreciated because it can be consumed with a wide variety of foods served in the course of a meal.
