Orta Nova (DOC)

ade in red and rosé versions, the Orta Nova wine takes its name from a commune located to the south of Foggia. It is made principally from Sangiovese and Uva di Troia grapes.

The latter variety is also known as Uva della Marina, because it is cultivated with excellent results in some areas along the coast to the north of Bari. It takes its name from Troia, a small community in the province of Foggia. The variety ripens in the first decade of October and the grapes, vinified alone, yield a wine that is quite alcoholic and dark red in color with purplish reflections. In combination with other varieties, however, it provides wines suited to aging with particularly distinctive characters.

The Sangiovese variety originated in Tuscany and most probably in the Chianti area. There are two principal types of the variety, which has various synonyms: Sangiovese Grosso and Sangiovese Piccolo. They are combined, as is the case with Orta Nova, with other red-grape varieties and are seldom vinified alone.
