Lamezia (DOC)

amezia Rosso and Rosato are dry wines produced from Nerello Mascalese, Nerello Cappuccio, Gaglioppo and Greco nero grapes grown around Lamezia Terme, Sant'Eufemia, Sambiase and Fildadelfia to the west of Catanzaro. Lamazia Bianco is produced in the same area from Greco bianco (at least 50 per cent: over 85 per cent the wine can be labeled Greco), Trebbiano toscano and Malvasia bianca.

An ancient city founded by Byzantine Greeks, Catanzaro became an important administrative center during the reign of Holy Roman Emperor Charles V. Today, the community is a commercial center that is more dynamic now than at any time since the eve of the decline of the silk industry in the 16th century, when there were 1,000 looms in operation in the city. Introduced in the Norman period, the art of silkworking reached the height of its splendor in the 14th century.

Noted for the variety and volume of its viticultural output, the province of Catanzaro is best known for its Lamezia, a wine with a cherry-red color that at times develops pinkish shadings.
