There are many old D.O.C. areas around Lake Garda. The Garda D.O.C., however, was established in 1996. It extends to the territories of the provinces of Mantua and Brescia in Lombardy and Verona in Veneto.
Garda D.O.C. represents a new appellation concept that allows the producers to concentrate their efforts only on those grapevines that best suit their vineyards' particular conditions, picking from no less than 18 grape varieties.
Within this appellation, the Rosso, Chiaretto, Groppello and Bianco wines produced in 25 municipalities of the province of Brescia can avail of the "Classico" subcategory.
