he Freisa vineyards situated in the provinces of Asti and Turin account for two PiedmonteseDenominazioni di Origine Controllata. One of the denominations covers the Freisa di Chieri, which is located to the east of the regional capital of Turin, immediately after the ridge that dominates the right bank of the river Po. A series of hills extends from that point eastward to blend with the undulating terrain of the Monferrato district. They are known as the Colline Chieresi and geologically they are linked with the Monferrato and the Langhe. In those hills, little remains today of what was once a flourishing winemaking industry. A great deal of ordinary wine is produced, while output of Freisa di Chieri is concentrated in the territories of 12 communes only a short distance from Chieri. That wine is made exclusively from the variety of the same name. The antiquity of the area's vitivinicultural tradition is proven by the exhibits at one of the most appealing wine museums in Italy. It is located in the hamlet of Pessione just outside Chieri. Some growers distinguish two subvarieties, Freisa Piccola and Freisa Grossa. That difference was first noted by Count Nuvolone, deputy director of the Turin Agrarian Society, at the end of the 18th century. Freisa di Chieri is usually a dry wine but a considerable part of the output is vinified in such a way as to create a sweetish or even sweet beverage that is fizzy or sparkling, depending upon the degree of refermentation of the natural residual sugars.
