aenza is a splendid city of Roman origin, rich in artistic treasures. Her exquisitely handcrafted ceramics brought her fame in many parts of Europe during the Renaissance. Her very name has come to mean ceramics in many European languages: from "faiance" in French to "faience" in English.For many centuries, the hills surrounding Faenza provided the city with a wine that, like those produced in neighboring areas, was good though without a distinct personality. In the late seventies, some foreign winemakers, attracted more by the beauty of the place than its winegrowing potentials, decided to come and settle here. These winemakers brought with them new grape varieties and vinification techniques, which immediately led to great results and yielded a number of much praised wines.
Their success shook the local producers and triggered extraordinary renewal and innovation in the years that followed. In 1997, these efforts were crowned with the award of the Colli di Faenza D.O.C. appellation. The most important types of wine produced under this appellation are a Rosso Riserva and a Sangiovese Riserva, both of which rival the most important Italian reds.
