he Colli del Trasimeno production area draws its name from the lake dominated by the hills where the zone's vines grow. And it consists of the series of ridges in the territories of various communes of the province of Perugia that descend gently toward the shores of the lake. This district, known as "the green heart of Italy," has produced grapes and wines since the remotest periods. In fact, the particularly mild climate and the geological and morphological characteristics of the terrain are highly conducive to the cultivation of vines, which was initiated by the inhabitants of Etruscan settlements in the area. The hills around Trasimeno are specially suited to the growing of vines because of their fine exposures and because of a favorable microclimate determined by the effects of the thermal variations and evaporation characteristic of lake basins.
The area, which is rather extensive, features perfectly aligned vineyards that are cultivated with great expertise by Umbrian vine-dressers. They are the sources of the wines of the Colli del Trasimeno, which received Denominazione di Origine Controllata recognition in 1972.
