he district extending from the spine of the Apennines down into the valley of the Po around Bologna is particularly dedicated to the production of white wines and is divided into six distinct areas: Monte San Pietro, Colline di Oliveto, Colline di Riosto, Colline Marconiane, Serravalle, Zola Predosa. They include a group of hills that are enologically centered on Monte San Pietro and extend their territory toward the river Po almost to the commune of Cento and occupies what is known as the Bolognese Plain.
The Colli Bolognesi territory is a rather interesting grape-growing and winemaking area with a considerable history. Among the varieties cultivated in the district are Barbera, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pignoletto, Pinot Bianco, Chardonnay, Riesling Italico and Sauvignon.
Some of those varieties, introduced recently, have found an extremely favorable habitat. Others have been cultivated in the area since the middle of the last century.
The wines of Colli Bolognesi were already highly regarded some time ago. And there has always been considerable demand for them, so that, up until the outbreak of the last world war, the price of wine in the district of Bologna was determined by the prevailing price in the cellars around Monte San Pietro.
