Botticino (DOC)

otticino's production area, situated in a small district of stony hills around Brescia in the eastern part of the region, includes the territories of the communes of Botticino, Brescia and Rezzato. Grapes have been grown in the zone since extremely ancient times. It has been determined, on the basis of discoveries of fossil remains of "vitis silvestris", the ancestor of "vitis vinifera sativa" (the wine grape), in the province of Brescia, that the vine existed in the area 5,000 years before the beginning of the Christian era.

Botticino takes its name from that of a small community with which it is closely associated. For the wine has always played a role of vital importance in the local economy and sales were already flourishing before the 19th century, as numerous documents attest.

However, it should be noted that there was a considerable delay in attributing to Botticino the standing it deserved. The Denominazione di Origine Controllata was granted in 1968 in response to the need to safeguard the value of the wine, which is basically determined by the characteristics of the environment and the favorable interaction of the terrains and the producing varieties. With every justification, connoisseurs compare Botticino with the most famous Italian wines without any fear of being deceived.
