Bianco Capena (DOC)

he Bianco Capena wine is produced in an area with an ancient agricultural tradition about 30 kilometers north of Rome. The zone includes the whole of the communal territory of Capena and parts of those of Fiano Romano, Morlupo and Castelnuovo di Porto. It is also noted for its olive orchards, which produce a splendid extra-vergine oil.

The Bianco Capena is obtained from the classic grape mixture of the Castelli Romani district, a combination of various clones of Malvasia-di Candia, del Lazio and Toscana-and of Trebbiano-toscano, romagnolo and giallo. A small percentage of Bellone and Bombino (or Bonvino) is also added. The Bombino, which is also known as Uva di Spagna despite the fact that an Iberian origin seems highly improbable, has been grown in Latium since remote times and in the past it was held in high esteem by local growers because of its productivity and its good resistance to climatic adversities.

The Bianco Capena is a good white wine for consumption with meals but it seems to have suffered somewhat from competition on the Rome market with the more renowned wines of the Castelli, which are often selected by the consumer because of their reputation rather than because they are intrinsically superior in quality. Recent investments by local producers have led to improvements in the planting of the vines and an expansion of the production structure with the result that there has been a generalized increase in the level of quality of the wine.
