Vino 2009 - Italian Wine Week showcased five unique wine producing regions: Abruzzo, Calabria, Lombardia, Toscana and Veneto. These regions represent for Italy a broad range of grape varietals and styles, as well as geographical diversity from the far north to the southern tip of "the boot."

TOSCANA is one of the most well known regions, producing classic reds from the native Sangiovese grape: Brunello di Montalcino, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, Chianti and Carmignano, as well as new styles of whites.

The VENETO, which has emerged as Italy's largest wine producer, is home to world-class Prosecco and the popular trio of Soave, Valpolicella and Bardolino. Discoveries lie in Abruzzo, Calabria and Lombardia.

Mountainous ABRUZZO is known for its Montepulciano and Trebbiano d'Abruzzo and the newer appellation Controguerra.

LOMBARDIA produces another signature sparkling wine, Franciacorta, and has emerged as a formidable producer of Nebbiolo wines.

Far down in the South, CALABRIA's grape varietals, the white Greco and red Gaglioppo, have a provenance from Greece.

Like all regions of Italy, these five have a storied history, regional flavor and distinctive character which were highlighted to thousand of wine professionals during Vino 2009 - Italian Wine Week.
