Although for centuries the pear tree was considered a very precious plant, it was generally relegated to the ornamental courtyard orchards of nobles. During the present century, however, improved methods of transport, storage and growing have led to considerable advances in the
quantity and quality of pear trees. The Pera Mantovana comes in the following varieties: William, Max Red Bartlett, Conference, Decana de Comizio, Abate Fetel and Kaiser. In the Upper Po area of Mantua, the pears may be grown without recourse to the forcing techniques that technology has made available in recent years because the natural conditions of the area of cultivation, which are quite different from those of outlying districts, already guarantee an adequate output. The area of production includes numerous town districts in the province of Mantua.
